The Fidel Velázquez Sánchez Gym celebrated its 25th anniversary with taekwondo, bodybuilding, cachibol, boxing, and Zumba exhibitions on Wednesday, July 15.

The facility belongs to the Union of Day Laborers and Industrial and Maquiladora Workers (SJOIIM).

Recognizing Athletes

During the event, SJOIIM presented awards to outstanding athletes who form part of the gym’s history.

SJOIIM Secretary General Juan Villafuerte Morales attended the celebration. Agustín Martínez Félix, president of the union’s Sports Commission and host of the event, and José de la Paz Bermúdez Salceda, sports director for the Matamoros municipal government, joined him on the stage.

Members of the SJOIIM Executive Committee and Sports Commission participated with gym staff. Perla Hernández, who oversees the facility, served as master of ceremonies.

Events Across SJOIIM Sports Facilities

The anniversary program continued on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with boxing, soccer, softball, basketball, and baseball events at several SJOIIM sports facilities.
