The Regional Federation of Workers of Matamoros (FRTM) commemorated the 140th anniversary of International Workers’ Day with an event centered on unity, reflection, and recognition of the working class, bringing together affiliated unions, union delegates, and various commissions.
The ceremony was attended by authorities and union leaders, who joined this meaningful event dedicated to remembering the historical importance of the labor movement, the defense of workers’ rights, and the progress achieved for the benefit of workers and their families.
Union unity and defense of labor rights
During the ceremony, participants highlighted the fundamental role of labor organization in building better working conditions, benefits, and social security. The event also reaffirmed the commitment to continue promoting actions that strengthen the well-being of working families in Matamoros.
FRTM General Secretary Juan Villafuerte Morales emphasized the achievements consolidated over the years, including access to social security, while also pointing out that important goals remain ahead.
Among the priority issues, he mentioned the continued effort to advance toward a 40-hour workweek in companies that have not yet adopted this model, the need for greater legal flexibility for companies establishing operations in Mexico, and the creation of an unemployment insurance program for special cases, especially when companies leave the country and workers are left vulnerable.
Recognizing the role of women and young workers
Rocío Escobar Domínguez, Secretary of Organization and Statistics of the FRTM, shared a message of unity and support for the Regional Federation of Workers of Matamoros, while also recognizing the important role women have played throughout union life.
Representing young workers, Perla Hernández González, delegate from Parker, and Cristian Raúl Ortiz, delegate from Autoliv on behalf of SJOIIM, also addressed attendees. Both agreed that the struggles of workers in the past are not merely part of history, but a living force that continues to inspire young workers to pursue new labor achievements.
A struggle that continues
This commemoration reaffirmed that the workers of Matamoros remain united, firm, and committed to defending their rights, working together toward a future with better, fairer, and more dignified labor conditions.
International Workers’ Day reminds us that the labor struggle does not stop. History continues to be written every day, and the voice of Matamoros’ working class remains strong, demanding a better future for present and future generations.
