In observance of Day of the Dead, a time to honor those who have passed on, the Sports Commission of the union, coordinated by Agustín Martínez Félix, organized a unique tribute: an ofrenda (altar) at the Fidel Velázquez Sánchez Gymnasium celebrating the lives and legacies of the worker athletes from our community.
Day of the Dead Celebration
The altar, rich with symbolism and respect, featured the esteemed Wilfrido Campos, a city’s sports pioneer. Our General Secretary, Juan Villafuerte Morales, emphasized in his speech the importance of this festivity as a connector between the living and those who, though absent, stay in our hearts and memories.
Altar in Honor of the Athletes
The event also served as a platform to recognize our sports heroes. Figures such as Mario Canales Salas, INDET team selector; Luis Vázquez Limas, Little League Baseball coach; and Manuel Javier Ochoa, official scorer for the Workers’ Softball League, were inducted into the SJOIIM Hall of Immortals.
We invite you to share your memories and experiences with the athletes we remember today. Come visit the altar at the Fidel Velázquez Sánchez Gymnasium and join us in this tradition of remembrance and honor.
