As part of efforts to strengthen labor dialogue and strategic collaboration between unions, companies, and public authorities, the Union of Industrial and Maquiladora Workers (SJOIIM) joined Senator Olga Sosa Ruiz on an institutional tour of world-class companies in Matamoros, showcasing the region’s highly skilled workforce.
Aerospace industry: talent beyond borders
During the visit to Kearfott, an aerospace components manufacturer, the delegation was welcomed by Plant Manager Horacio Rodríguez Jr., who explained the company’s advanced production processes.
The senator spoke with unionized workers, recognizing their technical expertise and emphasizing that their work—used even in spacecraft—represents pride for Matamoros, Tamaulipas, and Mexico.
She also highlighted the crucial role of women in manufacturing and reiterated her support for the 40-hour workweek initiative to improve working conditions nationwide. Notably, Kearfott has already operated under this schedule for years.
World-class manufacturing
The delegation also visited Varel, a global leader in the manufacturing of drilling tools for the oil and mining industries.
Plant Manager Homero Valdés Sánchez guided the tour, where the senator engaged directly with unionized employees. Varel was recognized for maintaining one of the region’s longest-standing collective bargaining agreements, offering competitive wages, above-law benefits, and a 40-hour workweek.
Coordinated efforts for labor development
Attendees included union leaders, INDEX representatives, municipal authorities, and company delegates, all emphasizing the importance of ongoing collaboration to ensure fair, productive, and competitive workplaces.
SJOIIM’s historic commitment
SJOIIM reaffirmed its historic leadership in protecting labor rights and highlighted its pioneering role in implementing the 40-hour workweek across maquiladora companies.
For more than three decades, union negotiations have enabled multiple companies to adopt this model, improving worker well-being while strengthening industrial productivity.
