After 24 years of waiting, Matamoros has finally become Mexico’s newest seaport with the official inauguration of the Puerto Norte of Tamaulipas, formerly known as Puerto Mezquital.
This marks a historic event for Mexico’s foreign trade and a new era of economic opportunities for this border city and the state as a whole.
A Turning Point for Regional Development
The launch was led by Governor of Tamaulipas, Dr. Américo Villarreal Anaya, who highlighted the strategic importance this port will have not only for the state but for the entire north of the country.
The Puerto Norte of Tamaulipas will become a key driver for port development, serving as a connection point for:
- The 12 automotive assembly plants operating in northern Mexico
- The 4 steel plants located in this same industrial corridor
- A broad logistics network that will boost import and export operations
SJOIIM and FRTM Presence
Juan Villafuerte Morales, General Secretary of the Regional Federation of Workers of Matamoros (FRTM) and the Union of Day Laborers and Industrial Workers of the Maquiladora Industry (SJOIIM), attended the event accompanied by:
- Jesús Sánchez Alvarado, Secretary of External Affairs of SJOIIM
- Sergio Villarreal Alejo, President of the Education Commission
- A group of construction sector colleagues who came to witness this key moment for the city
The presence of union representatives underscores the direct link between this economic development and the future labor opportunities for Matamoros’ workforce.
A Promising Future for the Working Class
This new port will not only boost trade but also bring:
- New infrastructure investments
- Creation of formal jobs in transportation, logistics, construction, maintenance, export services, and more
- Stronger ties with the maquiladora industry, the backbone of the local workforce
On behalf of the maquiladora industry workers, SJOIIM expressed its gratitude to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo for her support in making this social and economic impact project a reality.
Why Is This Inauguration So Significant?
This port is much more than a loading and unloading facility. It represents:
✔️ Direct connection with international markets
✔️ Lower logistics costs for companies based in northern Mexico
✔️ Faster and more competitive commercial alternatives for the northeast region
✔️ Accelerated urban and industrial development for Matamoros and its surrounding areas
Final Words
The inauguration of the Puerto Norte of Tamaulipas marks a before and after for Matamoros. It proves that when government efforts combine with labor sector participation, real and tangible progress is achieved for everyone.
SJOIIM and FRTM will continue working to ensure that this new economic chapter directly benefits the workers of Matamoros, defending decent jobs and promoting more opportunities for growth.
